AICP News
Over the past year, I have received an
ever increasing number of members requesting information about the
reporting of CM credits, problems with specific aspects of reporting, or
questions regarding what educational opportunities can be found on the
listserv/direct mailings that might offer CM credits.
The following four
options should assist you in answering any future questions:
-For
future questions regarding the reporting of CM credits, please
contact our most current Professional Development Officer (PDO) for APA
Indiana, Cynthia Bowen, AICP, directly at
PDO@indianaplanning.org .
-For
specific questions regarding the reporting of CM credits from the
recent OKI Regional Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, you might
also
try to contact Megan
de Sola at
mdesola@vioxinc.com (see her previous email below).
3. -For
future questions regarding what educational opportunities will offer
CM credit, please contact the coordinator or identified contact for
each specific opportunity (or the originator of the email/notice).
Please
Note: Some providers of
educational opportunities may not be aware of the AICP CM credit program
and this would be a good opportunity to let them know that there is
interest among our membership to register their offerings for CM credit.
4. -As
always, additional information regarding the CM credit program,
online reporting issues, and registered/pre-registered CM credit events
can be found at
http://www.planning.org/cm/index.htm
and navigating through the recently updated APA Website.
Thank you for your future consideration in this matter.

OCTOBER
2008 PDO MEMO INFORMATION
From:
Lynn M. Jorgenson, Leadership Chapters Coordinator, American Planning
Association
Certification Maintenance (CM)
Leadership
Meetings in Washington, DC - October 18-21
Below are highlights of items discussed among CPC leadership and staff
at the meetings in Washington, DC.
CD ROM
lending Library
The licensing agreement for the use of APA’s CD ROMs for CM is finally
complete. Attached you will find the information you will need to use
these products for CM purposes.
Planning
for Healthy Places with Health Impact Assessments Online Course
The online course is available free of charge at
http://professional.captus.com/Planning/hia/default.aspx.
AICP members may claim 6 CM credits by going to the CM Activities page
at
http://www.planning.org/cm/search/
and searching “Distance Learning” offerings. The course can
be found on the second page of offerings. Members can also find it by
typing in the title of the course into the search field and clicking
“Go”. We will soon be creating a page on our website that highlights all
of APA’s online courses. Until then, please pass along this link to
members.
Additional
Online Courses
Work continues on three additional online courses: Hot Topics in
Planning Law, Ethical Practice for Practicing Planners, and
Transportation and Land Use. These courses are expected by early-mid
2009.
Ethics
Session Toolkit
Staff has prepared
the attached toolkit to assist APA components and members in conducting
ethics training sessions in their own communities. It was also posted to
the PDO listserv on Thursday, October 23.
Community
Planning Workshop Toolkit
Staff is currently
working on a toolkit to provide chapters with guidance on organizing and
hosting community planning workshops. This toolkit will be modeled after
the Ethics Toolkit mentioned above.
Phase
II of APA’s New Website
The following
features are scheduled to launch with Phase II of the new web redesign
(expected Nov/Dec 2008): self-reporting, logging credits for authoring
or speaking/instruction at an event, and new provider registration
packages (annual unlimited, weekly, etc.). Please remember that all
providers will have the option of registering CM credits under the
current $50 per hour of training or choosing one of the new
packages. The old options do not go away.
CM
Fees for Chapters
Staff will be
producing itemized reports of Chapter CM fees for 2008 and will send
them to Chapter Presidents, PDOs, and Treasurers within the next few
days. This report will give you the opportunity to cross-check your
financials with what’s been recorded into our CM provider system. It is
our goal to produce these kinds of reports for each quarterly rebate.
CPC
Chapter Best Practices with CM
Attached you will
find the CM best practices document provided to us by Courtenay Mercer,
AICP, NJ Chapter President.
Sign
In Sheets
Providers are
required to record attendance for their CM events but are not
required to use sign in sheets for individual sessions at multi-part
events. For example, a chapter conference that records attendance via an
online or on-site registration system is not expected to record
attendance for individual sessions. If a provider does not have a way of
recording attendance, however, then sign in sheets are required. We
apologize for any confusion that was caused by staff’s miscommunication
of this policy.
Self-reported ≠ Self-study
Members are allowed to report up to 8 CM credits that are from
activities not registered by a provider. The ability to claim
these “self-reported” credits is scheduled to launch with the new
system. Self-study is a term that identifies distance education
products, such as online courses, CD ROMs, etc. There is no limit to the
number of CM credits a member may claim from these kinds of educational
activities.
National
Planning Conference CM Credit Calculation
All sessions at the
National Planning Conference were registered for CM credit according to
the time of training provided. An hour of training was registered for
1.0 CM credits, not 1.25 credits.
Partial
CM Credit
Members are not allowed to claim partial credit for an activity.
Members can only log the number of credits that are registered by the
provider. If your event is designed to offer the flexibility of
attending a portion of the full event (e.g. attendees being able to
attend one-day out of a two-day workshop, or half of a full day event),
then we encourage you to register it for CM credit under the “multi-part
event” option.

May 2009
Application Preparation
APA
encourages that all applicants apply early and begin gathering
employment/education verifications before submitting an application.
Applicants can get ahead start by creating a rough draft on a MS Word
document. Items to include in the draft are (for each job):
1)
Employer
2)
Position
Title
3)
Dates of
Employment
4)
Supervisor’s
Name
5)
How your
position(s) meets the four criteria comprising AICP’s definition of
professional planning experience. The definition can be found at
http://www.planning.org/certification/experience.htm. Each criteria
response must meet a minimum of 200 hundred words and cannot exceed the
maximum of 500 words.
Please note that each criteria has its own section on the application.
Applicants must complete unique responses for each criteria and each job
listed on the application. Having this information saved and ready to go
will allow members to submit their online application much quicker. Any
application or verification submitted near or on the deadline, may take
significantly longer to process.

Certificate Maintenance
On April 13, 2007, the AICP Commission approved a measure requiring AICP
members to engage in continuing education in order to maintain their
certification starting January 1, 2008. By ensuring that members have
up-to-date skills and training in best practices, Certification
Maintenance (CM) enhances the credibility of the planning profession and
increases the value of your AICP credential. To learn more about the
Certificate Maintenance program, see
http://www.planning.org/cm.
APA Indiana recognizes the need to keep our members informed with the
most comprehensive information currently available on CM program as well
as opportunities. As such, we are asking your patience as we adapt to
the new CM program and try to get our CM Opportunities submitted in a
timely fashion. Additionally, we are currently evaluating ways to
provide CM Opportunities to all our members through partnering with
various organizations as well as offering webnairs. If you should have
any questions, please contact APA Indiana PDO,
Cynthia
Bowen, AICP.
