Planning Humor

Even the most enthusiastic planners have days when they feel discouraged. How about using humor to cope? Below are some recommendations for planning-related humor.

Parks and RecreationParks and Recreation has some of the funniest TV moments for anyone who’s ever worked for local government. It didn’t exactly make bureaucrats look cool, but it did often get to the heart of why many of us love (and sometimes get frustrated) working for government and with citizens. Therefore, I’ll forgive them for getting rid of the city planner character after the first season. Bonus, it’s set in Indiana.

The Onion – There are so many hilarious satirical articles related to planning. Here are just a few:

Planetizen – Planetizen’s April Fool’s Day edition goes back at least as far back as 2009 and is always topical. Planetizen also regularly collects and posts Friday Funny articles.

Planning Peeps – Memes just for planners! Planning Peeps is both a facebook page and a website.   Although the memes are my favorite part, there are also articles, planning school rankings, and a What Type of Urban Planner are You? quiz. Here are a few of my favorite memes:

Gilmore Girls episodes often poke fun at planning-related topics during their town hall meetings. If you’re tired of dealing with temporary uses, watch this discussion of cart, kiosk, cart/kiosk permits (starts at about 1:20) or if you’re fed up with licensing see Season 1, Episode 21’s town hall meeting about troubadour licenses.

Neighbors for More Neighbors – NIMBYs got you down? Neighbors for More Neighbors encourages you to “talk to your friends about zoning” with a variety of YIMBY (Yes in My Backyard) posters. Slate also published a nice article about the website.

Cards Against Urbanity– For something social and funny, check out Cards Against Urbanity. Cards Against Urbanity is a variation on Cards Against Humanity, a variation on Apples to Apples. It’s simple to learn and can be hilarious, especially with the right crew of urbanist friends. If you missed the Kickstarter campaign to buy the cards, you can still print your own. The rules are also available online.

Planners Pointing Evidence that “when we plan, we point.” I’d be surprised if any planner doesn’t have at least one public meeting photo featuring you and/or your planning colleagues pointing!

  1. Thanks Katie, this was great! Expect some of this to show up in Nitty Gritty presentations… And in my fantasy Parks & Rec community, planning continues to play a big role! Leslie gets a Masters in Planning from Ball U!
