A Message from the President
Hopefully everyone had a good summer as we look into the coming Fall. This Fall the Kentucky Chapter will be hosting the OKI Conference in Lexington, Kentucky. The KY Chapter has an exciting agenda for everyone for October 1st thru the 3rd. Plenty of sessions to choose from with CM credits and a number of social and networking opportunities with our colleageues for the Ohio and Kentucky Chapters. Former APA President Mitchell Siler will be the keynote luncheon speaker on Friday Ocotber 3rd. Hope to see you there.
The conference has a broad range of topics that will be discussed; economic development, hazard mitigation, complete streets to managing your planning office and dealing with the stress. I may attend the stress management sessions after The Role Planners Should Play in Stormwater Management. I am beginning to find out the planner’s role in Porter County is rather significant in stormwater management with the recent rains going through the state and area. And it can be stressful.
Liveable communities is still a popular topic to discuss with complete streets, greenways, improving community health and creating an image. The work planners are doing around the country with offering healthier communities is also offering us the opportunity to change our health and make it a life choice. I will be interested in the presentation discussing burn out and frustration on the job. For me, getting through the frustration and burn out I look to my home town of Valparaiso and the great work they are doing with the pathway system and the communities and counties in the Northwest area of the state. Bad day in the office, I go for a walk, run or bike ride and take advantage of the planning work others have done. Helps with the stress of the day or if done in the morning, prepares me for the day.
Remember planning is for our future also and has an effect on our children. So what do I do for major stress relief? Grab my youngest daughter, go camping, bring some tye dye and run races with with names such as Freak, Hippie and Flower Power. Far Out Man!! I probably really aged myself with this. I did read another article on helping with health and stress titled “Are You In The Now?” After this past weekend I would probably say “No.”
In two years the IN Chapter will be hosting the OKI conference in Indianapolis. Two years may seem a ways off but it is time for us to start planning for this event. I have asked past presidents Jamie Palmer and Rose Scovel if they would co-chair the OKI committee for the IN Chapter. We will need a number of volunteers to help make this conference a success in 2016. If you have been interested in working with the Chapter this will be a great opportunity. Please let me know if interested in working on the OKI 2016 committee, you may contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
At the end of last year the Chapter volunteered to be part of APA’s consolidated elections along with a few other chapters across the country and some divisions. The consolidated election will end the first week of September. While the Chapter did not have any contested races we will be welcoming those Board members returning and new to their position. APA National is proposing to have all Chapters and divisions along with the APA board elections consolidated and on the schedule the IN Chapter was part of this year.
That is all for now
President, APA-IN Chapter
