HOPPIN’ NEIGHBORHOODS: Craft Breweries as a Revitalization Tool

The Central Region of APA-IN hosted a brewery tour in downtown Indianapolis June 21st. The group, a sampling of planners from cities around the central region, gathered in the morning at the City Market to hear speakers from Indianapolis breweries Sun King and Flat 12 and the future Braxton Brewing of Cincinatti. Each told stories of success, the trials of searching for a location, and lessons in being good neighbors.

The group then loaded 2 neon green Indy Brew Buses to begin the tour. We spent a few hours touring 4 downtown breweries, learning more from their founders and owners about the business and their locations, and, of course, sampling their wares. We then headed back to City Market to recap upstairs at the Tomlinson Tap Room. The Tap Room is a joint venture between the Brewers of Indiana Guild and various brewers that serves only Indiana micro-brews.

The goal of the tour was to learn how to be more accommodating to venturing micro-brews in our own communities. The Guild reports that since the Broad Ripple Brewpub–Indiana’s oldest micro-brew–opened its doors in 1990, craft beer popularity has been on a steady incline. In recent years, the number of Indiana breweries has increased dramatically and will soon cross the “over 100” threshold.

We’d like to thank Indy Brew Bus for a great afternoon and our driver, who said we were the most “laid-back and courteous group they had ever had.” While I’m still not sure if it was meant as a complement, we had a great time!

We’d also like to thank Flat 12, Sun King, Fountain Square and Bier Brewery for hosting us, RATIO for being a sponsor, and all that attended this Central Region event. We look forward to many more fun and educational afternoons!
