On Friday, August 2nd, the APA-IN Southern Region presented its second annual regional educational event. This year the event was centered on a workshop with a series of presenters titled “Planning for Healthy Communities.” The event was held at the Millhouse Restaurant in Jasper Indiana during the 35th annual Jasper Strassenfest. Over twenty five professional planners and engaged citizens discussed how to plan for the intersection of the built environment and public health, complete streets, and planning for pedestrian and bicycle travel. Planners from Bloomington and Jeffersonville discussed their efforts fro make their communities more friendly to non-motorized transportation. Bloomington’s “Breaking Away: Journey to Platinum” initiative to strive toward a platinum rating by the League of American Bicyclists and Jeffersonville’s recently completed “Bike and Ped Plan” were highlighted.

Presenters included:

–       Kim Irwin, MPH, Executive Director, Health by Design/Alliance for Health Promotion

–       Pete Fritz, AICP, RLA, Healthy Communities Planner, Indiana State Department of Health

–       Vince Caristo, Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator. City of Bloomington

–       Shane Corbin, Planning Director, City of Jeffersonville

Following the workshops, attendees took part in a tour of downtown Jasper. The tour includes the Patoka River

Riverwalk, the skillfully recreated Jasper City Mill and Jasper Depot, and the painstakingly restored Spirit of Jasper train. After the tour, many participates also enjoyed themselves at the Strassenfest, a celebration of the German heritage of the community. Thank you to all of the workshop presenters for another great professional development opportunity.
